Delmon Young and his defense

His catch at the wall and ensuing throw out at 2B on the next hit was awesome to watch. The Yankee hitter just slowed up and waited to be tagged after the ball beat him by so much. He had the look on his face of "the coaches did not warn us about his arm."

He's looked good in RF, almost as if he's been rejuvenated by playing a position more comfortable to him.

The funny thing is that the Yankee fans could have stopped him from making the catch and it wouldn't have been interference. They let him make the catch. A nice night defensively but I've seeen too much of Delmon lately. Can't believe he didn't get a double on the ball that got past Beltran and off the wall.

Wait a minute, the Yankee fans don't interfere and he made a lucky catch? He still had to jump with his arm extended and glove over the wall to catch the ball. And the second play the ball took a lucky bounce right to him? He still made an absolutely perfect throw to get the runner by ten feet.

Markakis would have had his hands full making either play.

I guess lucky was a poor word choice. Things went his way to help him make those plays.

You're probably right, but he does "appear" better in RF than LF for whatever reason and his career rate in RF by both DRS and UZR is basically at PAR. .

So far in 68 innings in RF Delmon is+.6 UZR which projects to 35.6 UZR/150.

I agree with you. Even with things going his way (fans not interfering and the ball ricocheting his way), you still have to make those plays and he did. And one can't take anything away from that rocket throw.

You know, too many fans and pundits assume that, if Player A plays a certain level in the past years, then he's always going to play at that level. There doesn't seem to be room for any sort of change in anyone's thinking. So perhaps Delmon made lucky catches or threw lucky throws or whatever. Or else -- is it actually possible? Delmon was aware (or was made aware) of some of his past defensive problems. And he went off and put in the work and practice to improve his defensive play. Maybe he is showing that he's turned a corner on his defensive play. And that would be very, very nice.
